SHARE, an acronym for Self Help Association for Rural Education and Employment, is a community-based non-profit organisation, established in 1992 to empower rural women in the southern Indian province of Tamil Nadu.

The SHARE philosophy is based on the belief that true development is possible only by empowering women through income generation. At the Christian Medical College in Vellore, outreach workers realised that the health and social status of the population would not improve until women could generate income and become more financially independent.

The women artisans who are members of SHARE participate in all levels of decision-making in the organization. Many of the women involved are Dalits, formerly known as “untouchables”, who are the poorest of the poor in India. Products exported by SHARE include palm leaf and sisal baskets and Christmas decorations.
